Herps Journal Entry: The Boa Constrictor
Materials
Journal Procedures
Materials
- Blank journal (with or without lines; some people like journals with lines to help keep text even; others like it without the lines so they don't interrupt their drawings)
- Pencil and or pen
- Any or all of the following: coloring media such as crayons, colored pencils, markers and paint
Journal Procedures
- Go to Wikipedia's list of boines here. You may also want to make more searches for boa constrictors to find out more information about them.
- Read through the list and any interesting links in the articles. Tip: The red highlighted names in the Wikipedia list don't yet have information about them, they are just "stubs" or placeholders until someone adds information about the snake. All of the names in blue have information and many of them have photos. Some of them have only a little information without photographs. Check out how many different species of boa constrictors there are!! Wow!
- Think about what you've read and consider how you would like to journal about at least one species per entry in your journal. Try to keep one species per entry as this allows you to really get to know the animal and be more thoroughly focused with your species research.
- Make a sketch from any of the pictures of the boa constrictors in your journal. Color them in their life-like colors.
- Add interesting facts about the snake to your journal page and try to arrange all the information on one page. Include at least these basics and include the headings on your journal page: a). Name of the boa b). What does it eat? c). Where does it live (consider including a hand-drawn map of it's region), e). Where does it sleep? f). Where does it go when too hot or too cold? g). Any other interesting facts you want to include about the species.
- Decorate your page with drawing of their eggs, babies, habitat vegetation and more! Have fun!
- Take photos of your journal page and upload them onto a blog (the CurrClick student blog if you're taking my CurrClick live class) to share with your class and or the world! If you photograph your journal pages, be sure to get good, clear closeups so people can read your text.

Please note: Neither of the two videos shown in the live class are available on You Tube anymore. Below, I've replaced them with equivalent lengths and from each of the same series, so it can make for interesting further viewings from each of the series. Enjoy!
